Scott Joplin: Ragtime musician of the 1800's-1900's
Scott Joplin was known as the 'Entertainer'. He had many ragtime hits during his time.
Scott Joplin (1867-1917) - Scott Joplin was born somewhere in Texas. The location is unknown. He got a hold of a piano when he was younger, from where his mother worked. Scott taught himself how to play the piano, as well as read music. His talent was noticed by a music teacher in the area where they lived, and expanded his knowledge in different types of music. Joplinplayed in a few bands when he was a little older. He played in the Queen City Cornet Band; the band was made up of black musicians. Only being in the band for a year, he left and started his own performing at dances and other events. In 1895, Joplin and his vocal
group, Medley Quartette, went to Syracuse, New York. The group impressed the people of New York so much that they issued his first two publications, Please Say You Will and A Picture of Her Face. Joplin went on to write other songs, including a few rag songs. His most famous song that was published was Maple Leaf Rag, it sold over a half-million copies in 1909.
